Dunollie Castle
Another good visit is to the ruins of Dunollie Castle, north of town on the Corran Esplanade towards Ganavan, from where there are also wonderful views.
The castle was built on the site of an ancient stronghold of the King of Scots, and then taken over in the 13th century by the MacDougalls, Lords of Lorn.
Dunstaffnage Castle
Three miles north of Oban, Dunstaffnage Castle is the principal seat of the Campbells. The C13th fort is built on an impressive site and much of the huge curtain wall remains intact.
The ruins of the little chapel nearby are worth a look. The castle served as a temporary prison for Flora MacDonald. For more details and opening times call +44 (0)1631 562465.
